SHARPSVILLE – Equipment is in place to finally hoist away the historic Kelly Road Bridge in Sharpsville.
Plans call for the 187-foot-long bridge, spanning the Shenango River, to be lifted by a massive crane today, Mekis Construction, the project’s contractor, said.

The project will replace two parallel spans, both owned by Mercer County, located between East High Street in Sharpsville and the entrance to the Shenango River Lake Recreation Area in Hermitage, PennDOT said.

It’s been a long journey for the bridge, known by engineers as a steel, through-struss structure. It was erected in 1897 to carry horses and buggies.
Closed to traffic in 2005 due to severe deterioration, many of the its metal beams shows extreme rusting.
Plans call for a portion of the bridge’s portals and stonework to be preserved in a park nearby. The bridge is adjacent to a park that holds the last intact, stone lock from the 19th-century Erie Extension Canal.

Since its closure, all traffic has been routed onto a newer, I-beam bridge beside it that was built in 1967. About 475 vehicles a day use the single-lane bridge, PennDOT said.
The $4.065 million project is being paid for with 80% federal funds, 15% state funds and 5% municipal funds. Work is expected to be completed in the spring of 2023.
